How Far Are We In Developing A Real Artificial Intelligence


Sometimes, we wonder if robots will ever be created in our lifetime. With all of the work we need to do, it’s hard not to imagine if machines accomplished these tasks instead.  So while you’re dreaming of the possibilities, scientists have been working hard to make this dream a reality. But, how far along are we in creating artificial intelligence? Let’s find out.   

First, what is Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence?

First and foremost, what’s the definition of intelligence? Well, it basically means the capacity to learn, understand, and be self-aware. It’s a trait that allows problem-solving skills to be developed. At the same time, it’s also the capability to understand information and keep it as knowledge.    On the other hand, artificial intelligence means machines have the means to do all those things. It’s when something man created mimics the ability to learn and understand. If you’re having a hard time imagining, here’s an example. Do you remember Skynet from all those Terminator movies? Yeah, Skynet is self-aware and can learn things on its own. That makes it a prime example of artificial intelligence.    

Now, there are three kinds of artificial intelligence. There’s weak Artificial Intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence, and Artificial Superintelligence. Weak Artificial Intelligence machines are designed to fulfill only one function autonomously. Artificial General Intelligence is machines that can do many tasks well and can adapt too. Lastly, Artificial Superintelligence can surpass the most intelligent person in this world by a million miles.    

Where are we right now in Artificial Intelligence development?

Right now, there are a lot of machines under the weak Artificial Intelligence category. One good example of a weak Artificial Intelligence is Siri, Apple’s digital assistant. Meanwhile, development on Artificial General Intelligence machines is still ongoing. There have been significant steps taken during the last few decades. Some of these are found in commercial applications, data mining operations, and neural networks. Although the discoveries have been significant, we’re still so far away in creating a functioning Artificial General Intelligence machine.    

How far along is Artificial Intelligence?

In fact, most scientists in this particular field have been scratching their heads for a long time now. Ben Goertzel, a scientist in the Artificial Intelligence field, said last 2006 we are ten years to a century away from creating accurate artificial intelligence. There have been various conferences and research groups that have been tackling this problem. As of now, there isn’t any major breakthrough to make all of our robot dreams come true.    

Should we proceed and create Artificial Intelligence?

Also, speaking of its realization, there are many concerns involving the creation of Artificial Intelligence. For one, would it really be ethical to do such a thing? In creating Artificial Intelligence, we would be relieving the human race of so many burdens and tasks. At the same time, we may tend to be dependent on these machines for our daily tasks. Also, that also includes the significant number of people who will lose their livelihoods to these machines.    There’s also the concern of Artificial Intelligence becoming smarter than human beings. 

If scientists achieve the creation of a super artificial intelligence, would it learn to do away with us? It has been a favourite plot among many sci-fi movies, computers surpassing humans and all. When that happens, the extinction of our race is going to be just another Monday for these machines. That, and so much more are only one of the many concerns regarding Artificial Intelligence.  Artificial intelligence may be far off in the future. At best, we have a full decade before we even get a glimpse of Artificial Intelligence. But here we are, creating its foundations today. While these machines aren’t self-aware yet, it’s best to think about the possibilities they are going to bring.
